Environmentally Significant Areas Education Program

The City of London has seven Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) that are held in public ownership and managed jointly by the UTRCA and City: Kains Woods, Kilally Meadows, Meadowlily Woods, Medway Valley Heritage Forest, Sifton Bog, Warbler Woods and Westminster Ponds/ Pond Mills Conservation Area. These ESAs are protected because they represent different significant habitats within the urban area of the city.

Each year, the UTRCA's education staff select one ESA and invite local schools to participate in the ESA education program. The goal is for students to become familiar with the ESA in their local community and learn why it is such a special area, and to encourage stewardship.

This program has been developed to meet some of the grade 6 Diversity of Living Things curriculum expectations. Through a variety of in-class activities and a PowerPoint presentation, students gain an understanding of:

  • the biological, geological and cultural features that determine ESA designation, including habitat and species diversity;

  • the dependency and interrelationships of living organisms within the ESAs;

  • how ESAs are managed; and

  • human impacts on ESAs and stewardship.

Development for this program was made possible through a funding grant by the Shell Environmental Fund. Ongoing program delivery is thanks to funding support from the City of London.
