Wetlands Education Program

The Wetlands Education Program is offered annually in September and takes place at Sifton Bog Environmentally Significant Area (London) and Brick Ponds Wetland Complex (Woodstock). In addition to a two hour field component, there is a half day classroom visit in which students continue to expand their understanding of wetland habitat and function.

Grade 4 classes are invited to participate in this program. Preference is given to schools located near these significance natural areas to encourage a sense of ownership and stewardship for local wetlands. The program meets Grade 4 Habitats and Communities curriculum expectations.

Through exploration, hands-on activities, games and nature interpretation students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of wetland habitat and functions

  • investigate the dependency and interrelationships of the living organisms within a wetland community

  • identify factors that can affect a wetland habitat and its communities

  • recognize a local wetland as an historically and environmentally significant site

This program was launched in the fall of 1999 and made possible through development funding by the Brick Ponds Education Program Committee, a subcommittee of Woodstock City Council.

Funding support for student participation has occurred annually thanks to the generosity of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and the Woodstock Environmental Advisory Committee.
