The Thames River Watershed

Geology

Southwestern Ontario was shaped by advancing and retreating glaciers during the last period of glaciation about 15,000 years ago.

As the ice melted, lakes and spillways formed between the retreating glaciers creating the present Thames river system.

The moraines deposited by the glaciers covered the underlying bedrock and became the hills bordering and scattered throughout this watershed. The bedrock is visible in only a few places such as the limestone quarries at St. Marys and Beachville.
