  • Recommended Native Trees, Shrubs & Vines for Naturalization Projects in the Upper Thames River Watershed (pdf file) - Many people want to plant locally native species, but don’t know which species are endemic to the Upper Thames River watershed or where to obtain them. To assist community groups, consultants and landowners who want to use native woody species in their reforestation or naturalization projects, staff have compiled a list of 90 recommended trees, shrubs, vines and woody groundcovers.
  • A Guide to Native Woody Plant Selection for Middlesex County (pdf file) - This guide lists woody species (trees, shrubs and vines) that are native to Middlesex County and thus suitable for rehabilitation projects or for any gardener. There are also lists of species that are not recommended due to their rarity and those that are alien to the county.

Thames Heritage River Information

  • The Thames River Watershed: A Heritage Landscape Guide
  • Thames River Happenings - Summer 2008
  • Thames River Happenings - Winter 2006/07

  • The Thames River Watershed: A Background Study for Nomination under the Canadian Heritage Rivers System - The Thames River CHRS background study is available in CD-ROM and print versions through the UTRCA. This is an excellent reference document that describes the river from the time of its formation to early settlement periods to modern day recreational uses. The print version comes in a 3-ring binder and contains several colour fold-out maps and over 200 pages of information and pictures on the natural, human and recreational features of the Thames. The CD-ROM contains the same information; all maps and illustrations are in colour.

  • The Thames Strategy: Managing the Thames as a Canadian Heritage River (2000) outlines how the watershed’s natural, cultural and recreational features and values will be conserved and interpreted for the future. The strategy provides an opportunity for river managers, stakeholders and residents to work together to continue to conserve and revitalize the river’s many values.
