Get Involved!

Join your neighbours and get involved in these annual Friends of Stoney Creek events and projects.

Stoney Creek Community Day (April)

The annual Community Day is a great opportunity to meet your neighbours, plant native trees, and learn about local turtles and snakes at risk.

Thames River Clean Up (April)

2011 was the 12th Anniversary of the Thames River Clean Up. Over the past decade, many concerned volunteers, landowners, clubs, organizations and municipalities have pulled together during Earth Week to help clean up portions of the Thames River and tributaries.

All registered participants are eligible to win a brand new canoe donated by Nova Craft Canoe! Through participation in this event, secondary school students can earn hours towards their Community Involvement Volunteer Hours.

Communities for Nature in the Stoney Creek Watershed

The Friends of Stoney Creek are involved in naturalization projects on public lands and private properties in the Stoney Creek watershed. These projects involve:

  • Community Forestry - Establishing native tree and wildlife shrub communities in parks, along watercourses, schoolyards and on industrial and commercial properties (projects available in April, May and November).

  • Spreading Like Wildflowers - Creating native wildflower meadows and prairies by planting wildflower and grass plugs, and spreading seeds (projects available in late May and June).

  • Aquatic Connections – Restoring stream and wetlands throughout the watershed by planting native wetland species and bio-engineering (projects available from March to June, and September to November).

The planting is done by local schools and volunteers, under the direction of UTRCA staff.

The Friends of Stoney Creek apply for funds from various foundations, organizations and agencies to cover up to 100% of the total project cost. The only cost for landowners is usually site preparation time (e.g. cutting the grass).

Until now, the Friends have been concentrating their efforts in the urban portion of the watershed, but they would like to expand their efforts by partnering with rural landowners, schools and volunteers. Protecting and enhancing the creek and its tributaries in the watershed’s rural upper reaches is an important part of improving the stream’s overall water quality.
